Apple Airtags Win Approval for In-Flight Use Following ICAO Rule Change
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has updated its guidelines, allowing passengers to use Apple's Airtag devices as luggage trackers. Previously, some airlines questioned the use of Airtags due to ICAO rules on lithium batteries in aircraft holds.
Battery fires in baggage pose a serious safety threat. The new amendment states that devices with lithium content less than 0.3 grams or lithium-ion battery output less than 2.7 Wh can remain turned on during flights.
Apple Airtags, using CR2032 lithium coin batteries weighing 0.109g, now comply with these regulations. Devices exceeding these limits must still be switched off in checked baggage. source
Sweden Bolsters Aerospace Industry to Strengthen National Defence Strategy
Sweden is investing in its aerospace industry to bolster its total defense strategy, which prepares the country for potential conflict. The 2021-25 bill seeks to establish an agency that will review and evaluate total defense activities to ensure efficient spending.
Sweden's Air Force has ordered 70 Gripen E fighter jets, with 63 set for delivery by 2033. The multinational supply chain for Gripen makes it a favorable option for subcontracting.
The Swedish defense market is predicted to be valued at $4.5 billion between 2023 and 2028, with combat aircraft, ISR aircraft, and training and light attack aircraft receiving investments. source
Industry Experts Discuss Future of Drone Integration in Airport Environments
Industry experts are discussing Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) and drone integration into airports. Skyports Drone Services have been conducting ship-to-shore delivery trials in Singapore since 2021 and established a consortium with ST Engineering and Sumitomo Group in 2022.
Today, Skyports carries out daily flights in Singapore Harbor, improving the efficiency of the maritime industry. Ensuring safety in shared airspace is a top priority, with drone technology, internal standard operating procedures, and regulatory requirements all crucial components.
As Skyports continues to prove the feasibility and safety of drone operations, they aim to integrate into airport environments on a larger scale. Key challenges include regulatory development, electrification, and airspace management. source
Etihad Airways Boosts Toronto Service with Daily Flights and 15% Seat Capacity Increase
Etihad Airways will increase its flight frequency between Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) and Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) to daily service from May 30th, following the extension of a bilateral agreement between the UAE and Canada.
The airline is set to increase seat capacity and frequency by over 15%, with the additional flight operating on Tuesdays.
The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner will service the new flight, adding about 4380 seats per week. Etihad has interline and codeshare agreements with WestJet and Air Canada, respectively, to improve connection options at the Canadian end of the route. source
Alaska Airlines and American Airlines Pursue Separate Codeshare Agreements with International Carriers
Alaska Airlines (AS) and American Airlines (AA) are pursuing separate codeshare agreements with German airline Condor (DE) and Chilean LCC JetSmart (JA), respectively.
Condor has applied for US regulatory approval to codeshare with Alaska Airlines, intending to place AS codes on DE flights between Frankfurt and 12 US cities.
American Airlines and JetSmart have received US Department of Transportation approval for a two-year codeshare agreement, allowing AA to offer services between the US and worldwide destinations and enabling JA to display AA's designator code on flights within Chile and to third countries. source
Pilot, Engineer, and Parts Shortages Force Rex Airlines to Cut Flights on Nine Routes
Rex Airlines has reduced flights on nine regional routes across four Australian states, including Far North Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia, and Victoria, citing pilot, engineer, and parts shortages.
The company plans to reinstate the affected flights once the shortages are resolved. The changes impact Rex's 61-strong fleet of Saab 340 Turboprop planes and have been described as "minor" by network strategy general manager Warrick Lodge.
However, locals claim the reductions will negatively impact the affected communities' education, health, and culture. source
No Relief in Sight: Airline Ticket Prices Continue to Rise Amid Fuel Costs and Global Inflation
Airline ticket prices have not fallen as expected due to several factors, including unstable jet fuel prices, airlines facing operational challenges, and worldwide inflation.
Jet fuel prices significantly impact airline ticket prices, accounting for 25-30% of an airline's operating costs. Operational challenges, such as labor shortages, high labor costs, supply chain disruptions, and aircraft delivery delays, contribute to airlines' need to maintain profitability.
Inflation also plays a role, as ticket prices recently began to match global inflation rates. Despite these increases, passenger demand remains high. To save on ticket costs, passengers are advised to book flights at least three months in advance or utilize miles and rewards. source
Aerospace Sector Targets Military Veterans for Exciting Career Opportunities
Aerospace organizations are actively recruiting veterans and ex-military personnel for their valuable skills and experience.
These individuals possess leadership, teamwork, and decision-making abilities and experience with cutting-edge technologies, making them ideal candidates for roles such as avionics technicians and aircraft mechanics.
Veterans' adaptability, security clearance, and experience in extreme conditions further enhance their appeal in the aerospace sector. source
Lufthansa Group Nears Deal for 40% Stake in Italy's ITA Airways
ITA Airways and Lufthansa Group are close to finalizing negotiations for a 40% stake in ITA, the Italian state-owned airline that replaced the debt-ridden Alitalia.
ITA Chairman Antonino Turicchi revealed that the main aspects of the deal have been agreed upon, and a Lufthansa spokesperson confirmed the advanced stage of the talks. Lufthansa's exclusivity period for negotiations with ITA ends on April 24th.
ITA's fleet aligns well with Lufthansa Group's airlines, but the Italian carrier's SkyTeam alliance membership and Lufthansa's Star Alliance affiliation may pose operational challenges.
The Lufthansa Group comprises Lufthansa, Air Dolomiti, Austrian, Brussels Airlines, Edelweiss, Eurowings, and Swiss. source
Singapore and Germany Collaborate on Air Traffic Management to Boost Safety and Sustainability
The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) and DFS Aviation Services, a subsidiary of Germany's DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to enhance air traffic management between the two countries as flight frequency recovers to near pre-pandemic levels.
The agreement focuses on improving safety, sustainability, performance benchmarking, and training.
Both parties will collaborate on safety data collection, developing sustainable air traffic management initiatives, establishing common performance indicators for benchmarking airports, and exchanging training instructors to develop new training curriculums and programs. source
