Airbus Targets Malaysia as Key A220 Market in Asia-Pacific Expansion Plan

Airbus is engaged in talks with multiple Malaysian airlines regarding its A220 aircraft, as the company identifies Malaysia as a strategic growth market in the Asia-Pacific region.

Airbus Asia-Pacific President Anand Stanley confirmed these negotiations on May 19, 2025, citing significant potential for the A220 in Malaysia.

While no deals have been finalized yet, Airbus expects the A220 to serve as an ideal feeder aircraft for regional services within Malaysia and neighboring countries.

Key Points

  • Strategic Market Potential: Airbus sees Malaysia as its third-largest market in Asia-Pacific after China and India, with approximately 150 Airbus commercial aircraft currently operating in the country and expectations of 400 additional orders for future delivery.

  • Regional Connectivity Focus: The A220 is being positioned as the perfect aircraft for enhancing connectivity between Malaysia and neighboring countries, particularly for routes connecting tier-two cities that are currently underserved.

  • Existing Customer Base: While specific airlines involved in the talks remain undisclosed, Airbus noted that AirAsia is already a major customer for its A320 and A330 families, while Malaysia Airlines operates an all-Airbus widebody fleet.

The A220 competes directly with Embraer's E2 series and smaller Boeing 737 variants.
