Hungarian Carrier Wizz Air Takes Delivery of First P&W-Powered A321XLR

Wizz Air takes delivery of the world's first Pratt & Whitney GTF-powered Airbus A321XLR aircraft during a ceremony at Airbus' Hamburg Finkenwerder facility on May 20, 2025.

The Hungarian low-cost carrier becomes both the first airline globally to operate an A321XLR with P&W engines and the first European low-cost operator of this long-range narrowbody aircraft.

Key Points

  • Historic milestone: Wizz Air is the first operator of A321XLR with Pratt & Whitney GTF engines, marking the third airline globally to introduce the A321XLR after Iberia and Aer Lingus.

  • Fleet expansion: The delivery is the first of 47 A321XLRs ordered by Wizz Air, with six planned to enter service in 2025. The aircraft is registered as G-XLRA and will operate under Wizz Air UK's AOC.

  • Range capability: The A321XLR offers an unprecedented range of up to 4,700 nautical miles, enabling Wizz Air to connect Europe and the Middle East with nonstop flights that were previously impossible with narrowbody aircraft.

  • Fuel efficiency: The aircraft delivers 30% lower fuel burn per seat compared to previous generation competitors, along with reduced NOx emissions and noise.

  • Engine advantages: The P&W GTF engines provide additional benefits, with the upcoming GTF Advantage variant offering 4-8% more takeoff thrust, enabling higher payload and longer range while delivering up to 1% additional fuel efficiency.
