Boeing Secures Major 777X Win as China Airlines Orders Passenger and Freighter Models
Taiwan's China Airlines has formally ordered 14 Boeing 777X jets, comprising 10 777-9 passenger aircraft and 4 777-8 freighters, with options for 9 additional planes.
The deal makes China Airlines the first Taiwanese carrier to order the next-generation 777X and joins a select group of airlines ordering both passenger and freighter variants of the advanced widebody aircraft.
Key Points
Order valued as part of an $11.85 billion fleet renewal plan announced in December 2024 that also includes 10 Airbus A350-1000s
The 777-9 will be configured for 426 passengers in two classes, offering 20% lower fuel consumption and emissions than previous models
The 777-8 Freighter provides 747-sized payload capacity (118 tonnes) with 30% better fuel efficiency and a 60% smaller noise footprint
Options secured for 5 additional 777-9s and 4 more 777-8 Freighters beyond the firm order
Deliveries expected to begin in 2029, with the order originally booked anonymously in March 2025
Boeing's 777X program now has over 520 orders globally, though FAA certification for the 777-9 is expected by late 2025 or early 2026
