Boeing and Airbus Share 71 Aircraft IAG Order for Next-Generation Long-Haul Aircraft

International Airlines Group (IAG) announced a significant order for 71 wide-body aircraft from both Airbus and Boeing, continuing its strategy of splitting fleet acquisitions between the two manufacturers.

The multi-billion-dollar deal includes 53 new aircraft orders plus 18 conversions of existing options, with deliveries spanning from 2027 through 2033.

This major fleet investment aims to modernize IAG's long-haul operations across its airline brands while supporting both replacement needs and strategic growth.

Key Points

  • 32 Boeing 787-10s ordered for British Airways with GE Aerospace GEnx engines

  • 21 Airbus A330-900neos ordered for potential distribution among Aer Lingus, Iberia, and LEVEL brands - marking IAG's first A330neo order

  • 18 previously exercised options: six A350-900s for Iberia, six A350-1000s and six Boeing 777-9s for British Airways

  • Additional purchase rights secured for 10 more 787s and up to 13 more A330-900s

  • Approximately two-thirds of the new aircraft will replace the aging fleet, while one-third will support growth in IAG's core markets

  • The new orders are valued at over $21 billion and announced alongside a US-UK trade agreement

  • Deliveries timeline: option conversions between 2027-2030; new orders between 2028-2033

What It Means

IAG's strategic dual-sourcing secures critical delivery slots amid industry-wide production constraints, while generating leverage in future negotiations.

The 787-10 commitment solidifies Boeing's position in IAG's widebody fleet, while the A330neo selection diversifies the group's Airbus fleet composition.

This staggered delivery schedule provides IAG with capacity growth flexibility should market conditions shift, while addressing its aging 777-200ER and early A330 replacement needs without overcommitting capital in the near term.
