Low Pilot Morale or Protest? Cathay Pacific Grapples with Slow Taxiing
Cathay Pacific has accused its pilots of taxiing at slower speeds than other airlines, according to an internal memo. However, the Hong Kong Aircrew Officers Association, representing the pilots, argues this is a result of low morale stemming from poor contracts revised in 2020, with pilots reportedly receiving 40% less pay than pre-pandemic. The contracts calculate pilot salaries by flight time, including taxiing.
The airline, which plans to achieve 70% of pre-pandemic capacity by year-end, is facing labor shortages and currently has fewer than half the pilots it needs to reach this goal. source
Russian Airlines Receive U.S. Aircraft Parts Despite International Sanctions
Despite sanctions imposed following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, U.S.-made aircraft parts were illicitly shipped to Russian airlines, according to Russian customs data.
The data, compiled by U.S.-based trade data aggregator Import Genius, shows that tens of millions of dollars worth of parts were sent to sanctioned Russian airlines such as Rossiya Airlines and Aeroflot.
This was made possible by networks like that of Oleg Patsulya, a Russian citizen who was recently arrested on charges of violating U.S. export controls and international money laundering. These networks maneuver goods through various companies and countries, bypassing restrictions. source
China Airlines Exercises Option on Eight More Boeing 787-9 Jets
China Airlines has decided to exercise its option for eight additional Boeing 787-9 aircraft, augmenting its initial order of 16, for a total fleet of 24 jets.
The new planes, to be delivered starting 2026, will be deployed on regional, Oceania, and long-haul routes to address growing passenger demand.
The airline may also consider converting orders to the higher capacity Boeing 787-10 model. This move forms part of China Airlines' strategy to renew its fleet, potentially replacing its current Airbus A330-300s and enhancing its competitiveness. source
Singapore Airlines Soars with Record Profits and Revenues in FY2022/23
Singapore Airlines reported a record net profit of $2.16 billion for FY2022/23, a stark contrast to a loss of $962 million the previous year. This is bolstered by record revenues of $17.78 billion, a 133% increase from the prior year.
Passenger numbers surged, with Singapore Airlines and Scoot carrying 26.5 million passengers, a sixfold increase. The passenger load factor (PLF) also peaked at 85.4%.
Despite soaring fuel prices, the company managed to offset this with higher fuel hedging gains. The company anticipates continued robust demand for air travel in 2023, despite potential headwinds from geopolitical and macroeconomic uncertainties. source
Delta and Airbus Close to Sealing Deal for Wide-Body Aircraft At Paris Air Show
Delta Air Lines is in discussions with Airbus to potentially order a substantial number of A350 and A330neo twin-aisle jets, in response to increasing demand for long-haul flights and to replace older aircraft in its fleet.
The agreement, though not yet confirmed, could involve dozens of planes as Delta seeks to replace over 100 older A330 and Boeing 767 models. Both Airbus and Boeing's flagship wide-body aircraft are highly sought after, providing impetus for the parties to finalize a deal before the upcoming Paris Air Show. source
UK and US Lead Discussions on Sustainable Aviation at Detroit Summit
The UK and US are set to discuss Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) and aviation emission reduction at an investment summit in Detroit. The meeting will include representatives from the aviation industry and other countries like Canada and Singapore.
SAF, made from waste or by-products, can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% compared to fossil fuels. The UK aims to make SAF 10% of aviation fuel by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions in domestic aviation by 2040.
The summit will serve as a platform for industry discussions on sustainability initiatives. source
EASA Unveils Updated Roadmap for AI Integration in Aviation
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has updated its roadmap for the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into aviation, three years after releasing the first edition.
Dubbed AI Roadmap 2.0, the updated document incorporates insights from real-world AI use cases and includes plans for regulatory changes and the identification of common AI challenges in aviation.
It outlines a "mixed rulemaking approach" involving cross-domain and domain-specific rules, and highlights the potential of AI in airport operations. EASA treats the roadmap as a "living document," planning to amend it annually as AI technologies advance. source
Raytheon Technologies to Enhance KAI's FA-50 Aircraft with PhantomStrike Radar
Raytheon Technologies will equip Korea Aerospace Industries' (KAI) FA-50 Light Combat Aircraft with its PhantomStrike radar. PhantomStrike is a compact, air-cooled fire-control radar offering long-range threat detection and targeting. It is designed for various platforms, including light-attack aircraft and uncrewed aerial vehicles.
The upgrade enhances the FA-50's capabilities, with features like digital beam forming and multimode functionality. The radar production will occur in Mississippi, Arizona, and Scotland, with initial deliveries expected in 2025. source
Airbus' VSR700 Helicopter Drone Successfully Completes Autonomous Maritime Test
France has successfully trialed the VSR700 helicopter drone in its fully operational configuration. The drone, developed by Airbus Helicopters and the French defense procurement agency, performed 80 autonomous take-offs and landings from the deck of a civil vessel, demonstrating its robustness in harsh weather conditions, including winds above 40 knots.
The VSR700, designed for military use in complex maritime environments, can carry a range of payloads and offers enhanced surveillance capabilities. The latest tests build on a series of trials conducted in 2022 and early 2023. source
Delta Airlines Introduces Delta Sync Exclusives for SkyMiles Members
Delta Airlines has launched its Delta Sync Exclusives promotion for SkyMiles program members. The new service, available on domestic mainline aircraft, offers free Wi-Fi, access to bonus promotional offers, entertainment options like a free trial of Paramount+, and New York Times Games.
Delta plans to extend the service to seatback screens for a personalized entertainment experience and aims to have it on 700 domestic aircraft by the year's end and its entire global fleet by 2024. source
