Executive Summary

  • Record revenue, squeezed profits: Starlux Airlines closed 2025 with revenue of NT$44.05 billion, up 23.9 percent year over year, then posted a record NT$28.55 billion in the first half of 2026. A 124 percent jump in international jet fuel prices flipped the half into a NT$346 million net loss.

  • A fleet in transformation: The carrier became the first Taiwanese operator of the Airbus A350-1000 in January 2026, holds orders covering 18 of the type plus 10 A350F freighters, and plans to grow from roughly 36 aircraft to 43 by the end of 2026.

  • A network crossing into Europe: Prague launched on August 1, 2026 as the airline’s first European destination, joining five US gateways and a dense Asian regional network of around 36 destinations.

  • Strategy under the spotlight: A contested oneworld application, fresh capital raising, a new ground handling license and a Skytrax 5-Star rating define the carrier’s next chapter.

Introduction

On August 1, 2026, a Starlux Airlines Airbus A350 lifted off from Taipei Taoyuan with the airline’s own chairman at the controls, bound for Prague. It was the young carrier’s first scheduled service to Europe, and it landed less than seven months after another first: the delivery of Taiwan’s first Airbus A350-1000.

Moments like these explain why Starlux has become the most closely watched airline startup in Asia.

Launched days before a global pandemic shut down international aviation, the carrier now flies to five US cities, holds a Skytrax 5-Star rating and generates record quarterly revenue, all while remaining small enough that a single fuel shock can erase a profitable quarter.

This deep-dive report analyzes the airline’s finances, fleet plan, route logic, hub operations, competitive standing, risk profile & more.

Let’s get started.

Starlux exists because of one of the most unusual stories in Asian aviation.

Founder Chang Kuo-wei previously served as chairman of EVA Air and left the family-controlled group after a succession dispute, then founded Starlux in 2018 as a privately funded startup.

He is a licensed widebody pilot, and he personally flew the delivery flight of the airline’s first A350-1000 and the inaugural Prague service.

The airline began commercial operations on January 23, 2020, with flights to Macau, Da Nang and Penang. Within weeks, border closures forced it into near-dormancy for two years, a brutal opening chapter that the company survived through cargo flying, charter work and quarantine-era services.

A listing on the Taiwan Stock Exchange under ticker 2646 gave the airline access to public capital markets, and its shares now trade alongside the island’s two established full-service carriers.

Starlux positions itself as a boutique luxury carrier rather than a scale operator.

Cabin interiors were created with BMW Group Designworks, service standards target the premium end of the market, and the brand earned a 5-Star Airline rating from Skytrax in June 2025, five and a half years after its first flight.
